Neil Gladd, Mandolinist - Composer

Contemporary American Mandolin Music

 

A graduate of Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University) with additional studies at Indiana University and Aspen School of Music, Mr. Cole taught instrumental and vocal music in public schools for many years before joining the faculty at Virginia Tech in 1971. At Virginia Tech he served as Chairman of the Music Program and as Associate Head of the Music Department.

Professor Cole has been active as a pianist and as conductor of several community orchestras including the New River Valley Symphony and the Roanoke Youth Symphony. He was director of recording for the Department of Music for ten years during which time he produced recordings aired on WVTF Public Radio in Roanoke, Virginia. Currently Professor Cole teaches Music in America and Music in General Studies (Music Appreciation.) He is co-developer of the Virginia Tech Multimedia Music Dictionary.

An ongoing project, the Virginia Tech Multimedia Music Dictionary is a joint development between Professor Cole and Ed Schwartz, Director of the New Media Center. The Virginia Tech Multimedia Music Dictionary, under development for over ten years, is a free dictionary  accessed by musicians, teachers, and the general public throughout the world.
