Summer Music Camp

Band, Jazz Band, and Chamber Ensembles for Rising 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Graders

Purpose

The Virginia Tech Department of Music is pleased to sponsor this camp for student musicians (rising 7th through 10th graders). The camp focuses on the development of individual musical skills together with regular and extensive contact with professional educators and musicians.

Musical Activities

Campers participate in daily band, small ensemble, or jazz ensemble rehearsals. Through master classes in individual instruments, students are encouraged to develop comprehensive skills by attempting a variety of approaches to musical accomplishment. Classes are offered in such areas as conducting, jazz, improvisation, composition, and computer applications in music. Optional private lessons are available. A final concert will be presented on Saturday morning, June 27, 2009.

Recreational Activities

Evening activities include a student talent night, faculty recital, movie night, swimming party, intramural sports, and game night all under the supervision of camp staff.

Staff

Artist-teachers, counselors, and conductors are chosen especially for their ability to work with young musicians and provide a meaningful learning environment.

Facilities

All instruction takes place in the Department of Music's handsome facility which has superb rehearsal rooms, teaching studios, well-designed practice rooms, and laboratories with state of the art electronic equipment.

Housing

Campers are housed in University dormitories and eat meals in the dining hall. Adult counselors are in charge at all times. Health facilities and physicians are available twenty-four hours a day.

Fees

  • Resident campers...$390.00 for a seven day camp includes room, board, tuition, recreation, and health fee.
  • Day campers...$270.00 includes tuition, 5 lunches, recreation, and health fee.
  • Private lessons are available for $20.00 per one-half hour lesson.
