John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet Presents Innovative Jazz Concert

John Hollenbeck?s Claudia Quintet, a New York-based jazz ensemble, will perform on March 15 at 8 p.m. in the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson-Brown?s Multipurpose Room. Admission is $5 and tickets can be purchased at the door. To reserve tickets in advance, call 540-231-5685.

The Claudia Quintet is regarded as one of the most innovative and promising groups to emerge in recent years from 'downtown' NY's new altjazz scene. The group has released two CDs, ?The Claudia Quintet? in 2002 followed by ?I, Claudia? which was released last year. They have toured extensively, receiving widespread critical acclaim and generating a buzz among both jazz and postrock audiences in the US, Europe, Australia and beyond.

?It?s impossible to classify The Claudia Quintet (postmodern- ethnic ambient- chamber- jazz anyone?) But surprisingly easy to understand its language,? said Nate Chinen of the Philadelphia City Paper. Known for being both accessible and intriguing, the Claudia Quintet's music calls their music ?postjazz?: combining propulsive grooves, sophisticated compositions and near telepathic improvisation. Both of their releases have received critical acclaim, including four stars from DownBeat magazine, ?Best of 2002" by Jazztimes and a ?CHOC? from Jazzman. Their new CD, Semi-Formal was released on Cuneiform in October 2005.

The Claudia Quintet is consists of John Hollenbeck (drums/composition), John Hebert (acoustic bass), Chris Speed (clarinet/tenor saxophone), Ted Reichman (accordion), and Matt Moran (vibraphone/ percussion).
