Generally, the movement of a performer to produce sound on a musical instrument. Specifically:

  1. The motion of a performer's arm, wrist and fingers that causes the drum stick or mallet to Strike a percussion instrument.
  2. The motion a performer makes with a bow to sound a string instrument. The motion is also called up-bow and down-bow.
