[Eng.] - [Fr.] - [Ger.]

An obsolete wind instrument invented at the end of the 16 century; it is made of wood and resembles a serpent. The instrument has a conical bore and finger holes along its length; it produced a harsh, rough tone. In modern ensembles the serpent is generally replaced by the tuba.
