- For wind instruments, a note played without stopping (muting).
- For stringed instruments, a pitch played on a string that is not stopped by the finger; for wind instruments, a note that is played without depressing a valve or key, or covering any fingerhole.
- A term used in rudimental drumming that refers to the speed at which a rudiment is performed. Typically, when a rudiment is performed, it is performed multiple times starting slow (or open), then getting gradually faster (or close), then getting gradually slower (or open).
