Brief biography:

Eric Whitacre began playing piano at an early age and played trumpet in the marching band in high school for a short time. With this interest in music, Whitacre received no formal music training before college and sang in the college choir at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He studied composition with avant garde Ukrainian composer Virko Baley and choral conducting with David Weiller. He completed his first concert work, Go, Lovely, Rose, at the age of 21. He received a Master's degree at the Juilliard School with composition studies under Pulitzer Prize- and Oscar-winning composer John Corigliano.

Many of Whitacre's works have quickly entered the standard choral and symphonic repertories and have received thousands of performances worldwide. He is also an accomplished conductor and has appeared with hundreds of professional and educational ensembles throughout the world. Whitacre conducts seminars and lectures with young musicians. Winner of the ASCAP Harold Arlen award, this musical also gained Whitacre the prestigious Richard Rodgers Award for most promising musical theater composer. He is married to soprano Hila Plitmann and has one son.
