Clara's parents were both musicians. In the eight years that they were married, they had eight children. In 1824, they were separated and divorced shortly after. Claras mother married an acquaintance of her fathers. Being considered legal property of their fathers, Clara and her siblings remained with him. Her general studies were blow par, but she learned a lot about music and business from her father.
Clara had known Robert Schumann as children and were wed in1840 despite Claras fathers refusal to give consent to their marriage. He was an unknown composer at the time while she had an international reputation. They lived in Leipzig, Dresden and Dusseldorf and had eight chidren. Robert went insane and tried to commit suicide in 1854. He was comitted to a sanitorium in Endenich where Clara was not allowed to see him for two and a half years. She only saw him in his last few days. He died in July 1856. |
