NOTE: Virginia Tech has phased out Blackboard and is now using Scholar instead.

What is Scholar?
"Scholar" is a web-based course management system available to all Virginia Tech instructors. Some choose to use many of the features offered by Scholar, while others, like me, prefer to use it for very specific things only. At this time those specific things include:

* Copies of Class Powerpoint Presentations that can be accessed outside class
* Several Quizzes, mostly for Extra Credit, to be completed during the first few weeks of the semester only

Please note that Scholar is NOT the Class Website for Music 2115. You may find that websit from the first Class Handout or through my personal Home Page on the Music Department website.

Please also note that Terms and Listening Quizzes--in effect the "homework" for Music 2115 which will count toward your Grade if you choose Grading Options 2 or 3, are not on Scholar, but are on the Pearson Website for this Texbook.

Where will I find Scholar?
Since it is web-based, you need to access it through your web browser. Go to:

* http://learn.vt.edu/

You will need to enter your PID (the name by which the Virginia Tech computers know you for your email) and your password to access the program. And you will have to be currently and properly enrolled in Music 2115 to get access to it.

What do I do once I'm into the Music 2115 Scholar site?

Scholar thinks it is managing the entire class. It isn't! All your quiz scores will be transferred to my own class Gradesheet, so ignore anything Scholar wants to tell you about your overall class standing or grade averages.

And Scholar is NOT the only website for this course. The URL for the official class website is on the handout you will get the first week of class, but for your information it is http://www.music.vt.edu/faculty/howell/2115/2115.html. And the URL for the Pearson website should be included with your textbook.

How do I take the quizzes?

The Terms and Listening quizzes on the Pearson Website are required for students who choose Grading Options 2 and 3 (see the Course Syllabus for an explanation). Students who choose Grading Option 1 may certainly take the quizzes for practice, and it is a good idea to do so, but those scores will not count on your final grade.
