Vernon Burnsed: music education

Vernon Burnsed is Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He received the Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Miami where he directed the University Laboratory School instrumental music program. Prior to attending the University of Miami, Dr. Burnsed taught elementary, middle, and high school instrumental music in the Georgia public schools and was appointed to the Georgia State Department of Education Music Curriculum Advisory Committee for the Georgia Middle Schools.

At Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Dr. Burnsed teaches undergraduate and graduate music education and research courses, advises all music education majors, and works closely with public school music personnel in field experiences for music education students. He is also the Director of the Virginia Tech String Project, a string music education program funded by the National String Project Consortium and NAMM, the international music products association.

Dr. Burnsed is an active member and state leader in the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). He served as Virginia College Section President, State Chairman of the Society for Research in Music Education, and fourteen years as Editor of VMEA Notes, The Official Publication of the Virginia Music Educators Association.

Dr. Burnsed is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher; he has given research presentations at national and international conferences in the United States, Europe, and Africa. His publications include articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, the Instrumentalist, Update: The Applications of Research in Music Education, The Journal of Band Research, Symposium, Journal of the College Music Society, The Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning, The Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, and Psychomusicology. The 2nd Edition of his textbook, The Classroom Teacher's Guide to Music Education is published by Charles C. Thomas. Dr. Burnsed also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Research in Music Education, the premier research journal in music education.
