Under the direction of Dr. Dwight Bigler, the choirs sing the finest choral repertoire from all time periods and genres.

The VT Music Department features three choral ensembles:

     Tech Men (M/R 5:30-6:55)
photo of the Tech Men performing The Tech Men are an audience favorite, performing music from the Renaissance to Barbershop and vocal jazz, spanning diverse international cultures. With a sound uniquely their own, they infuse concerts with richness of harmony, humor, and inspiring majesty. They rehearse on Mondays with the VT Women's Chorus and frequently join the other VT choirs to perform major works for choir and orchestra.

     Women's Chorus (M/W 5:30-6:55)

They were the founding choir of the first Mid-Atlantic Women's Chorus Festival with guest choirs from three states. They rehearse on Mondays with the Tech Men and frequently combine with the other VT choirs to perform major works for choir and orchestra.

     Chamber Singers (M/W/F 3:35-5:15)

They have performed at VMEA and ACDA conferences, the Washington National Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall. They have collaborated with the American Opera Theater and regularly perform with the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra. Chamber Singers is the most select choral ensemble on campus.

Auditions:

Auditions are held from the Thursday before classes through the first week of each semester in Dr. Bigler's office (Squires 242-J). Sign-up sheets will be posted by Dr. Bigler's office door starting the week before each semester begins.

VT Women's Chorus and Tech Men
For entrance into these ensembles, you must pass an audition that includes vocalizing throughout your range, a short sight-reading exercise, tonal memory repetitions, and a familiar song (such as "My Country Tis of Thee," "Amazing Grace," or "Happy Birthday"). You do not need to bring a prepared solo.

VT Chamber Singers
If you are interested in being considered for Chamber Singers, you must:

  1. audition by the first Wednesday of fall semester
  2. bring a prepared solo to your audition (classical art song, folk song, hymn, or Broadway ballad that shows classical-style singing)
  3. pass the standard audition (see audition requirements for VT Women's Chorus and Tech Men above).
The Chamber Singers call-back list will be posted on Wednesday afternoon. Call-back auditions will be held during Wednesday's regular rehearsal time.

Returning Members: All returning members of all choirs must sign-up for an audition each fall semester. Auditions begin on the Thursday before each semester, and all returning singers interested in Chamber Singers must complete their audition by the first Wednesday of the semester. Sign-up sheets will be posted by Dr. Bigler's office during the week before each semester. Please complete your audition early so new students can audition during the first week of classes!

Why Sing?

Singing in a choir at Virginia Tech is one of the best ways to make friends, refine your singing skills, and enhance your education! The credit you earn in choir can also satisfy certain requirements for electives (e.g., Area VI).

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do you have to be a music major to sing in a choir?
Definitely not! More than 75% of the current choir members are not music majors. The choirs are a wonderful mixture of students across campus, with many different majors.
  • How many performances per year?
Typically the choirs sing two concerts per semester. Occasionally, the choirs participate in additional campus performances, festivals, and tours.
  • Do I get credit for singing in a choir?
Yes! You must register for choir like any other class. Choir is worth one credit per semester and can count towards fulfilling degree requirements (e.g., Area VI).
  • Are there additional expenses as a choir member?
Yes. Each choir member pays choir dues (around $15) that include the cost of the choir t-shirt and money for social events. Each choir member must also purchase the choir uniform: black tuxedo for men, matching black concert dress for women. Tuxes can usually be purchased for $125 and up, while concert dresses are ordered at the beginning of each semester and cost around $70. If a tour or festival is scheduled for the year, additional fundraising activities will be planned to assist with those costs.
