Visiting Artist Series clarinetist Javier Vinasco, presents a masterclass. Free and open to the public.

A Colombian clarinetist, Javier Vinasco earned his Doctorate of Music by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 2008 he was nominated, along with Mexican pianist Edith Ruiz, for a Latin Grammy for their album Astor Piazzolla / Heitor Villa-Lobos. He is a representative of Colombia for the International Clarinet Association and is the festival artistic director for ClariSax Medellin. He has recorded seven solo CDs with about 55 works by American composers, some of which have been dedicated. His collection Mexico Clarinet Only in 3 volumes as a reference is unparalleled in the world of clarinet. In 2008 he premiered the Second Concerto for Clarinet Diego Vega with the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, and recorded with EAFIT Symphony Orchestra in 2009.  In 2010, he premiered the Concerto for Clarinet by Andrés Posada, dedicated to him, with the Symphony Orchestra of Caracas.  Read more here.

David Finkel, cello and Wu Han, piano present individual masterclasses. The cello masterclass will begin at 2pm in the Squires Recital Salon and the piano masterclass, will begin at 2:00pm in the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre in the new Center for the Arts.  Both masterclasses are free and open to the public and are sponsored by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech.  

The duo presents their concert, Russian Reflections, at the Center for the Arts on Sunday, November 17th at 8pm.  David Finckel, cello, and Wu Han, piano, are leaders in classical music today, as performers, entrepreneurs, and as co-artistic directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. In this recital, they present the gripping story of Russian music of the 20th century. Culminating in Rachmaninov’s ultra-romantic Sonata for Cello and Piano in g minor, Op. 19, the program showcases the styles of four of Russia’s most beloved composers: Prokofiev’s stately and lyrical Sonata in C major, Op. 119; the ground-breaking Sonata in d minor, Op. 40 by Shostakovich; and Alexander Scriabin’s sublime Five Preludes for solo piano, Op. 16.

American soprano Jennifer Aylmer has developed a sterling reputation for her beautiful voice, compelling stage portrayals, and impeccable musicianship. The New York Times has hailed her for her, “awesome accuracy,” while The Chicago Sun-Times has recommended that listeners, “bask in the aural delight of Aylmer’s dazzling shifts from regal command to cool insouciance and fatally attractive seduction.”  The 2011-2012 season sees Ms. Aylmer making her Italian debut in Concerto di Natale with the Haydn Orchester di Bolzano e Trento, and her return to the New Haven Symphony Orchestra in A Victorian Christmas.  Additional engagements include a return to Portland Opera as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, performances of Susan in The Filthy Habit with Urban Arias, Despina in Cosí fan tutte for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and several solo concerts.
