Blacksburg Master Chorale: American Originals - 7:30 pm, Friday, November 2, 2012 - Blacksburg Presbyterian Church [map]

The first concert of the BMC season will feature Carol Barnett’s The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass along with three newly commissioned works and favorite folk songs and spirituals.  Tickets are available at the door one hour prior to the concert.  Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, $20 general / $10 student.

 




Guest Artist Masterclass: Brooks de Wetter-Smith, flute - 10:00 am, Saturday, November 3, 2012 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

Brooks de Wetter-Smith presents a flute masterclass for the Virginia Tech Flute Studio.  This class is free and open to the public.

Flutist Brooks de Wetter-Smith performs a guest artist recital assisted by Dr Tracy Cowden, piano and Elizabeth Crone, flute.  The program will feature works by Gaubert, Schoenfield, Schocker and Franck.  Brooks de Wetter-Smith, the James Gordon Hanes Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina,  is in great demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist and masterclass teacher, having performed in 20 nations (Eastern- and Western Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and South America) and nearly all 50 states. His recordings are available on the Albany, Aurophon, Centaur, Christophorus, Crystal, and Paulinas labels, spanning baroque, romantic, and twentieth-centuries, and jazz-inspired repertoire. Many of his recordings include world premieres and works commissioned by or dedicated to him. His performances have been broadcast live on radio and television, including Radio Bremen, Bavarian Radio, Salzburg Radio, Radio/Television Hong Kong, and PBS affiliates in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina, California and Nebraska.  Faculty/Guest Artist Recitals are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student.  Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

Pianist Taylor Hutchinson performs a junior rectial.  Student recitals are free and open to the public.

 




Student Ensemble Concert: New River Valley Symphony Orchestra - 8:00 pm, Saturday, November 3, 2012 - Burruss Auditorium [map]

The New River Valley Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of James Glazebrook, performs an evening recital in Burruss Auditorium.  NRVSO tickets are $10 General, $8 Senior, and $5 Student. Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

Guest Artist Recital: Harmonie del Sur - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, November 7, 2012 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

Please join Harmonie del Sur for an evening of fresh and engaging new chamber music. Robert Murray, trumpet/flugelhorn and Lauren Murray, Oboe/English horn have been hailed for their “wonderful music rapport”, “impeccable intonation”, and “exquisite” performances in the United States and Europe. Recipients of numerous new works written specifically for their combination of instruments, they have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center and Merkin Hall in New York City. They have also appeared as performers/presenters at a variety of international conferences as well as recitals and masterclasses at universities across the US.  Guest Artist Recitals are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student.  Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

The students of the Gamma Mu chapter of Delta Omicron, an international music service fraternity, perform solos and ensemble music in an afternoon recital.  Student recitals are free and open to the public.

 




Student Ensemble Concert: SWE and Symphony Band - 3:00 pm, Sunday, November 11, 2012 - Commonwealth Ballroom [map]

The Symphony Band, conducted by David McKee and Polly Middleton, presents a program of concert band favorites. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by Travis J. Cross, opens with Midway March, honoring composer John Williams's 80th birthday. Student soloist competition winners Rebecca Johnson and Lee T. Seidner are featured on Il Convegno by nineteenth-century Italian composer Amilcare Ponchielli. The program concludes with David Maslanka's epic Symphony No. 4. Student ensemble concerts are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student. Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

UCM IV: New York Polyphony - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - St. Mary's Catholic Church

Co-presented by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, New York Polyphony is establishing a reputation as one of the world’s finest vocal ensembles. Praised for a “rich, natural sound that’s larger and more complex than the sum of its parts” (National Public Radio), the four men of NYP deliver dynamic performances in a wide range of styles. The quartet applies not only refined musicianship and interpretive detail but also a uniquely modern sensibility to its varied repertoire, which ranges from austere medieval melodies to cutting-edge contemporary works. NEW YORK POLYPHONY is: Geoffrey Williams, countertenor, Steven Caldicott Wilson, tenor, Christopher Dylan Herbert, baritone, and Craig Phillips, bass. Express Cincinnati quotes, "The kind of sound that makes you hold your breath so you don't miss a thing...." Furtive passion is the common thread for this concert, featuring music written for hidden chapels and discreet locations. The program will include William Byrd’s exquisite “Mass for Four Voices”; the sensuous texts of the Song of Songs, an anthology of Hebrew love poems by Renaissance composers; and contemporary works by Grayston Ives (b. 1948). Student Ensemble Concert: University Choirs, Holiday Concert - 8:00 pm, Friday, November 30, 2012 - Greene Memorial Methodist Church in Roanoke

The University Choirs perform two holiday concerts under the direction of Dwight Bigler and Scott Williamson.  The Virginia Tech Women’s Chorus, Tech Men, and Chamber Singers combine to perform holiday favorites with brass quintet, organ, piano and percussion.

The concert on November 30th at 8pm will be at Greene Memorial Methodist Church in Roanoke. Tickets are $18 for concert only and $35 for dinner and the concert. Call (540) 344-6225 or email gmumc@gmumc.org for ticket information.
