The New River Valley Symphony Orchestra - 8:00 pm, Saturday, March 2, 2013 - Burruss Auditorium [map]

The New River Valley Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of James Glazebrook, performs an evening recital in Burruss Auditorium. NRVSO tickets are $10 General, $8 Senior, and $5 Student. Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

Student Recital: 21st Annual SWE Student Soloist Competition - 7:30 pm, Tuesday, March 5, 2013 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

Virginia Tech students perform a recital as part of the twenty-first annual Symphonic Wind Ensemble student soloist competition. The winner, as determined by a panel of external judges, will perform with the Virginia Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble during the 2013–2014 season.  Student recitals are free and open to the public.

The University Jazz Bands, under the direction of Dr. Jason Crafton, perform an evening concert.  Student Ensemble Concerts are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student.  Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Wind Orchestra - 7:00 pm, Tuesday, March 19, 2013 - Old Dominion Ballroom [map]

The Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Wind Orchestra, Glenn D. Price, conductor, performs on tour to the 2013 College Band Directors National Association in Greensboro, N.C. The CCM Wind Orchestra is generally regarded as one of America's finest wind bands, whose members represent the top wind and percussion players in the conservatory. The concert opens with a few selections by the Virginia Tech Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Travis J. Cross, conductor. Student Ensemble Concerts are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student.  Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

 




Guest Artist Recital: Minor 4th Trombone Quartet - 8:00 pm, Wednesday, March 20, 2013 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

The Minor 4th Trombone Quartet presents a guest artist recital entitled Bach to Boyz 2 Men.  The Quartet performs works by Bach, Bourgeois, Koetsier, Boyz 2 Men, and Yunes.

The Minor 4th Trombone Quartet is a chamber ensemble praised for its high level of musicianship and technical ability. The M4TQ formed in 2005 while attending graduate school at The University of Texas at Austin. The ensemble reunited in 2009 to begin touring and promoting the trombone and chamber music.

The Minor 4th Trombone Quartet maintains an active performance schedule. They have recently performed at several universities in the state of Texas, the 2011 Big 12 Trombone Conference and 2012 Texas Music Educators Association's Convention. The ensemble has also been invited to perform at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, International Trombone Festival and Brazilian Trombone Festival. Devoted to education, the M4TQ’s members have given clinics at the Texas Bandmasters Association’s Convention and have selected the All-State band etudes on numerous occasions. The ensemble also continues to engage in the public schools through their outreach programs.

The artists who make up the quartet have busy careers in music and are in demand as performers and educators. Oscar Diaz is the Assistant Professor of Trombone at Texas A & M University – Kingsville. He holds positions with the Victoria, Corpus Christi and Laredo orchestras. Javier Stuppard is an assistant professor at Huston-Tillotson University and maintains an active performance schedule with Fresh 2 Def Horns. Stuppard performs regularly with the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Martin McCain is the Assistant Professor of Trombone and Jazz Studies at Texas State University and maintains a very active solo career. He performs regularly in orchestra and commercial/jazz venues. Rai Morales is the Assistant Professor of Trombone at West Texas A & M University and serves as Principal Trombone for the Amarillo Symphony and Opera.

The Minor 4th Trombone Quartet is proud to perform on Michael Rath Trombones. Faculty/Guest Artist Recitals are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student.  Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

UCM VI: Jeremy Denk, piano - 8:00 pm, Sunday, March 24, 2013 - Lyric Theatre [map]

Co-presented with the Center For the Arts at Virginia Tech, UCM VI features renowned pianist, Jeremy Denk. The program will feature: Tres Sonetti del Petrarca, S. 161, Fantasy and Fugue on the name BACH, S. 529,  Aprés une lecture de Dante, fantasia quasi Sonata and Isolden's Liebes-tod, S. 447 by Franz Liszt and Six Pieces, Op. 118 and Variations on a Theme by Paganini, Op. 35 by Johannes Brahms.  (Program is subject to change.) Tickets are $30 General | $24 Faculty/Staff or Seniors | $10 Students and youth under 18 yrs. old.  Tickets for the concert at the Lyric Theatre may be purchased at the Lyric Theatre online or by stopping by Monday through Friday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., or by calling 540.951.4771.
