The 30th Annual Rebecca Orr Benefit Concert - 8:00 pm, Friday, February 1, 2013 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

Be sure to attend the 30th Rebecca Orr Benefit Concert, presented by the Highlands Chapter of the Virginia Music Teachers Association and sponsored by the Department of Music at Virginia Tech.  Music Majors will be admitted free with their Convo card, and general students get in for half price, just $4.00.  Proceeds go to fund a music scholarship for an area high school student every year, and to cover expenses of the Highlands Chapter's educational projects, including an annual "Technique Festival" held in February to encourage area piano students to work harder! Everyone is invited to a reception following the concert.  Tickets will be $8 General, $6 Senior Citizens, and $4 Students.  Tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to the concert.




Special Event: Montgomery County Educational Foundations Benefit Concert - 3:00 pm, Saturday, February 2, 2013 - Blacksburg Presbyterian Church [map]

The Montgomery County Educational Foundation presents its First Annual Benefit Concert.  The concert will be at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church at 3pm on Saturday, February 2nd, 2013.  Featured performers will include the Blacksburg Children's Chorale Chamber Choir, the Kipps Elementary School Orff and Recorder Ensemble, the Blacksburg High School Madrigal Singers, the Children's Choir from Eastern Montgomery Elementary School, and Robert Chafin, tenor and Erica Ann Sipes, piano.  Ticket prices will be $12 general public, $10 seniors, and $8 students and youth under 18 years old.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time (info coming soon), or at the door one hour prior to the event based on ticket availability.  The Montgomery County Educational Foundation is a public foundation committed to supporting the Montgomery County public schools. They believe that the people who know what our schools need are the ones who are in the system, and provide grants to teachers, students, staff, and school organizations based on a grant proposal review process. Funds are available for all grade levels — pre-K through 12th.  The foundation supports area schools by supplementing their funding as well as by providing funds in areas outside the scope of existing funding.  Examples of potential funding areas include extra materials for teachers, after-school programs for students, and teacher development programs.

An Afternoon of the Brahms Sextets -- David Ehrlich and Janet Orenstein, violin; Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt and Amadi Azikiwe, viola; Ben Wyatt and Michael Kannen, cello. Virginia Tech faculty Jason Crafton and Tracy Cowden team up with Paul Neebe, principal trumpet of the Roanoke Symphony and faculty member at the University of Virginia, to present a program of music for two trumpets. Featured will be works by Turrin, Roskott, Clarke and the premiere performance of a work by Virginia Tech faculty composer Kent Holliday. Faculty/Guest Artist Recitals are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student. Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

International Latin American Music Conference - Keynote Lecture - 8:00 pm, Friday, February 22, 2013 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

Dr. Geoff Baker will deliver the keynote address for the ILAMC.  Virginia Tech's First Annual International American Music Conference will take place Friday, February 22nd and 23rd, 2013 in the Old Dominion Ballroom and Squires Recital Salon. Entitled “Transcending Borders: Latin American Music and its Projection on to a World Stage,” this project has been undertaken in order to advance the field of ethnomusicology as it relates to Latin American music and culture, to promote personal and professional relationships amongst the scholars within this field, and to provide research and performance opportunities for students in an area that is underrepresented in this state and region. 

During this two day period, scholars will present papers (in English or Spanish), departmental performers (both students as well as faculty) will be prominently featured in concerts of Latin American choral and instrumental music, and a professional group from Ecuador, the Ensamble Quito 6, will be on hand to present the culminating musical performance (UCM V).  This event is free and open to the public. 




UCM V: Ensamble Quito 6 - 8:00 pm, Saturday, February 23, 2013 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

UCM V features Ensamble Quito 6,  the resident ensemble for Virginia Tech's first annual Congress on Latin American Music, entitled "Transcending Borders:  Latin American Music and its Projection on to a World Stage".  Ensamble Quito 6 features classical instrumentalists performing traditional Ecuadorian music.  Quito 6: Victoria Robalino, violín; Amelia Rivadeneira, cello; Luis Arias, bass; Rocío Lima, flute ; Benito Tayupanda, clarinet; Alex Alarcón, piano.  Established in 2004, Ecuador’s “Ensamble Quito 6” consists of six professional musicians who individually have been acclaimed for the quality and consistency of their musical accomplishments. The goal of this group is to investigate and disseminate the traditional, classical and contemporary music of Ecuador through compositions and arrangements that have been specifically created for this ensemble. Jorge Oviedo, the director of the group, is a composer who has received national as well as international recognition. Tickets are $15 General |$12 Seniors/Faculty/Staff | $5 Students and Youth under 18 years old.
