Student Ensemble Concert: Early Music Ensemble - 8:00 pm, Saturday, December 1, 2012 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

The Early Music Ensemble presents an evening concert under the direction of James Glazebrook.  This concert is free and open to the public.




Student Ensemble Concert: University Choirs - 3:00 pm, Sunday, December 2, 2012 - Blacksburg United Methodist Church [map]

The University Choirs perform two holiday concerts under the direction of Dwight Bigler and Scott Williamson.  The Virginia Tech Women’s Chorus, Tech Men, and Chamber Singers combine to perform holiday favorites with brass quintet, organ, piano and percussion.

The concert on November 30th at 8pm will be at Greene Memorial Methodist Church in Roanoke. Tickets are $18 for concert only and $35 for dinner and the concert. Call (540) 344-6225 or email gmumc@gmumc.org for ticket information. 

The second concert, on December 2nd at 3pm will be at Blacksburg United Methodist Church.  Student Ensemble Concerts are $5 general, $3 senior, and $3 student.  Tickets are available at the venue door beginning one hour prior to the performance.

Brittney Arrington presents a junior horn recital.  Student recitals are free and open to the public.




Student Convocation - 2:00 pm, Tuesday, December 4, 2012 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

Music Majors perform during a weekly afternoon recital.  These recitals are free and open to the public.




Student Recital: Horn Studio and Ensembles - 7:30 pm, Wednesday, December 5, 2012 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

The Virginia Tech Horn Studio presents an evening recital featuring solos and ensembles.  Student recitals are free and open to the public.




Special Event: TubaChristmas - 4:00 pm, Friday, December 7, 2012 - Blacksburg Farmer's Market Square

Join in the fun as the town celebrates the Winter Lights Festival, with the annual lighting of the tree, parade, and Farmer's Market happenings.  TubaChristmas will make this the best holiday celebration ever! Dr. David Ball will be our guest conductor.   Bring your tubas, euphoniums and all of your friends to downtown Blacksburg on Friday, December 7th, 2012.  Participants, please RSVP to ecrone@vt.edu. TubaChristmas is sponsored by Downtown Blacksburg, Inc and the Department of Music at Virginia Tech 

Schedule and Details: 

  • Parking:  Kent Square Parking Garage – 207 Draper Rd, Blacksburg, VA 24060. 
  • Registration:  3:00 to 4:00pm - $5.00 per musician  (Department of Music, rm. 243, Squires Virginia Tech)
  • Rehearsal:  4:00 to 5:15pm  (Department of Music, rm. 243, Squires Virginia Tech)
  • Break:   5:15pm to 6pm (Dinner will be provided for the musicians.)  Pizza, hot chocolate, coffee and water.
  • Performance:  6pm to 7pm, (Blacksburg Farmer's Market Square, Outside. Warm weather dress and plastic mouthpieces are in order.)
  • Available for purchase:  TubaChristmas hats and/or scarves – $15.00, Music ‘Carols for a Merry TubaChristmas - $15.00, Commemorative buttons - $3.00.

Merry TubaChristmas is celebrating its 39th Anniversary (1974-2012). Created by Harvey Phillips, Merry TubaChristmas 2012 concerts will be presented in over 200 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Every Christmas season, tuba and euphonium players of all ages, from specific geographic areas, gather to pay respect - through William J. Bell - to all the great artists/teachers who represent their heritage. Depending on the population of any given geographic area, TUBACHRISTMAS ensembles may attract multiples of 100 participants aged 8 to 85 years! A Musical Potpourri: Manhattan Piano Trio

Musica Viva welcomes back the fabulous Manhattan Piano Trio following their previous sold-out performance. You will be treated to a program of trios and solos that will surely delight and uplift the audience, and leave you longing for more! The program includes Beethoven’s Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 1, No. 3, Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in C minor, and music of Sarasate and Weber.  Click here for ticket information.

Piano students of Mary Louise Hallauer, of various ages and levels from 7 years old to graduate students will play works by Bach, Mozart, Debussy and Liszt, as well as some Holiday duets and solos.  The recital is free and open to the public.

The young students in the Virginia Tech String Project perform an evening concert.  This concert is free and open to the public.




Blacksburg Master Chorale: Handel's Messiah - 7:30 pm, Friday, December 14, 2012 - Blacksburg Baptist Church [map]

The Blacksburg Master Chorale performs Handel's Messiah at Blacksburg Baptist Church.  Tickets are $20 general and $10 student and will be available at the door one hour prior to the performance.




Special Event: Alistair Leon Kok, violin - 8:00 pm, Saturday, December 15, 2012 - Squires Recital Salon [map]

A. Leon Kok, violin, and Susan Barrett, piano, present a program of Brahms and Copland.  The program will include Brahms' Sonata No.2 in A for piano and violin, Op.100, the Sonata for violin and piano and Hoedown from Rodeo by Copeland.  Alistair Leon Kok is an alumnus of Virginia Tech (1999) and completed a graduate performance diploma in violin from the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2011.  This recital is free and open to the public.




Blacksburg Master Chorale: Holiday Sing-Along - 7:30 pm, Tuesday, December 18, 2012 - Blacksburg Presbyterian Church [map]

The Blacksburg Master Chorale presents its annual Holiday Sing-Along concert.  Come along and sing holiday favorites with the choir! An evening of memories for all ages.  This concert is free and open to the public.  Donations welcome.
